Recent Work
My vessels are more sculpture than baskets. They are created with stitched and layered hog gut (better known as sausage casing). Hog gut, an unusual material for basket making, is white, flexible, and opaque when wet, but translucent, stiff, and parchment-like when dry. I stitch with hog gut, over a mold, threading the wet tubes on a large needle and working needle lace stitches over and around natural and found materials. (Needle lace is a form of embroidery used in making lace with a needle and thread). In my latest work, I have been exploring the possibilities of combining stitched and layered, dyed and natural gut with photographs, drawings, shells, and vintage lace.
